Chief AI Officer Statistics 2026: How Many Companies Have a CAIO?

Empty executive chair at the head of a boardroom table beneath a glowing glass nameplate

Short answer: 76% of organizations had a Chief AI Officer (CAIO) in 2026, up from 26% in 2025, according to the IBM Institute for Business Value CEO Study of 2,000 CEOs across 33 geographies and 21 industries. The CAIO has moved from an experimental title to a standard seat in the C-suite in about 2 years.

Key CAIO statistics at a glance

What is a Chief AI Officer?

A Chief AI Officer is the executive accountable for an organization's AI strategy, adoption and governance. The role typically covers 3 areas: deciding where AI creates value, building or buying the capabilities to deliver it, and managing AI risk, including regulation, data use and model failures. In the US federal government, M-25-21 defines the CAIO as the senior advisor on AI to the agency head, responsible for governance, risk management and strategic adoption.

Why did CAIO adoption jump so fast?

Where does the CAIO report?

Reporting lines vary. IBM notes that a significant number of CAIOs report directly to the CEO or the board, while others sit under the CTO, CIO or COO. The reporting line usually reflects the mandate: CEO-reporting CAIOs tend to own business transformation, while CIO- or CTO-reporting CAIOs tend to own platforms and delivery.

CAIO vs. CTO vs. CDO: how the titles differ

Some companies combine titles, such as Chief Data and AI Officer. For more on emerging titles, see the AI leadership roles guide.

What the data means for hiring a CAIO

  1. The candidate pool is stretched. When adoption triples in a year, demand outruns the supply of leaders who have scaled AI in production.
  2. Internal candidates matter. Many organizations fill the role by promoting a data, analytics or digital leader who already knows the business.
  3. Define the mandate before the search. A CAIO hired to run governance needs a different profile from one hired to drive revenue from AI products.
  4. Expect the role to evolve. With 77% of CEOs seeing talent and technology roles converge, the CAIO increasingly works alongside the CHRO on workforce redesign.
